Monita's Wishes

Ms. Monita Chanthavong, aged 16, was one of the two young people selected as the Lao delegation members to participate in United National General Assembly Special Session in New York (UNGASS), United States during
8-10 May 2002.

Monita is a sign teacher, teaching pre-class for disabled children at the National Medical and Rehabilitation Center in Vientiane Municipality, Lao PDR.

Save the Children Norway in Lao PDR took the lead, together with SC Australia, to support Ms. Monita Chanthavong and her sign translator Dr. Daravone Manivong, to attend UNGASS.

Monita was fully supported by her family and her organization to participate at this meeting. Monita shared her experiences and the situation of Lao children in Lao PDR with other children from many other countries. "During the group discussion in UNGASS, I loved to discuss and be involved in the education activities. UNGASS is very important for children and young people. It opened up for children to know more about their rights. I learned a lot about problems and obstacles that children are facing in countries around the world".

In the near future Monita will, together with her peer who attended UNGASS, organize a meeting with other children at the Rehabilitation for Disabled Children Hospital, to tell them about their experiences at UNGASS and to talk to them about their rights, as only a few children know about child rights.

Monita wishes Lao Children to: have access to education because education is very important for all, as much for children in rural areas and disabled children as anyone; to be healthy; and to have opportunities to visit other countries in the world "I do not want children to be exploited and be trafficked".
